Bolton boss Owen Coyle praised the attitute of his players after they fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Manchester City.

Goals from David Silva and Gareth Barry put Citizens two-goals up, before Ivan Klasnic pulled Wanderers back in the game before the break.

Edin Dzeko put the visitors 3-1 up moments after the break and although Kevin Davies pulled one back for the Trotters, Roberto Mancini's side held on to claim the three points.

Speaking after the game, Coyle admitted he was disappointed to lose the game but believes his players gave their all for the team.

"It was a terrific game of football," Coyle said. "We were very much in it right up to the full-time whistle. We faced a team full of world class players and could well have got something from the game.

"You know that when you face an elite club such as Manchester City that they have quality right throughout the squad and we had to be at our best. I think we showed that and stood toe-to-toe with them.

"It would have been easy to have felt sorry for ourselves when we were 2-0 down, but we scored a good goal and got right back in the game.

"We conceded a couple of goals and we could well have done better with those. In the second-half we pushed forward in search of the equaliser, and it tells you everything you need to know about the spirit and the belief of the group.

"We have shown that we can be a match for anyone, and although we have come out on the wrong side of the result today, we know that we gave a big performance.

"The crowd and the atmosphere was superb, and I think they know that they saw their team give 100 per cent. Each and every game their team will be out on the pitch trying to get the victory, but today it just wasn't to be.

"We are now back in training tomorrow ahead of our Carling Cup game against Macclesfield on Wednesday, and I hope we can count on the support of our fans once again as we kick-off the cup campaign."
