Bolton came from a goal down to beat non-league Newport County 3-1 at the Newport Stadium.

The Blue Square Premier side took a surprise lead in the ninth minute when Elliott Buchanan fired past Jussi Jaaskelainen, but Wanderers were level just four minutes later when Tom Miller put the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Ivan Klasnic put the visitors ahead in the 21st minute and completed the scoring on the stroke of half-time after being set up by a smart pass from David Wheater.

One sour note from Bolton's point of view is the news that Lee Chung-Yong was stretchered off the field after 30 minutes with his right leg in a brace following a poor tackle from Miller.

Bolton began brightly, with Chris Eagles seeing a 30-yard strike fly narrowly wide of the post early on, before he saw an effort from close range blocked after a superb run from Martin Petrov.

Chung-Yong then had a chance to break the deadlock, but decided to pass when it looked easier to shoot and the chance was gone.

Despite their good start, Wanderers fell behind on nine minutes as Buchanan latched on to a long ball from Lee Baker and stroked the ball past an onrushing Jaaskelainen from the edge of the area.

Their lead didn't last long though as the visitors were level just four minutes later. After a deflected Chung-Yong strike had been parried by Newport goalkeeper Danny Potter, Klasnic reacted quickest and his cross was turned into his own goal by the unfortunate Miller.

With 21 minutes on the clock, Klasnic got his name on the scoresheet as he peeled away from his market to nod home a cross from Petrov from close range.

Zat Knight saw a goalbound strike blocked moments later, before Chung-Yong was the victim of a challenge by Miller which required the South Korea international to leave the field on a stretcher with a suspected broken leg.

The injury seemed to impact on the game and it wasn't until the end of the half that Wanderers created a chance of note, with Klasnic hitting the post from point blank.

Despite missing that sitter, the Croatia international was on target in stoppage time as he capitalised on a cut-back from Wheater to put the ball past Potter and send Owen Coyle's side in 3-1 at the break.

Fabrice Muamba saw a shot fizz just wide of the target after the restart, whilst Knight came close again from a Petrov corner as Bolton went in search of a fourth goal.

Mark Davies shot straight into the arms of the goalkeeper soon after, before Nigel Reo-Coker sent the ball just wide of the target late on as a low-key second period drew to a close.

The victory is Bolton's fifth in six pre-season games, with their next game on Monday evening against Hereford United at Edgar Street.
