Bolton's season came to a disappointing end as they fell to a lackluster 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City.

Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko scored in each half as City claimed automatic qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League, while Wanderers end the campaign in the same place as last season, 14th.

The hosts ended the game with ten men as Daniel Sturridge was sent off for a high tackle on Dzeko late on, bringing a disappointing end to a successful loan spell at the Reebok Stadium for the Chelsea striker.

City were forced in to making a late change to their starting line-up as Micah Richards got injured the warm up, with Pablo Zabaleta coming in to the side.

Despite the late change, the visitors started brightly and should have been ahead within four minutes. David Silva raced beyond Gretar Steinsson and cut the ball back from the byline for Carlos Tevez, who saw his goalbound shot blocked by the chest of Zat Knight.

Wanderers' first real chance came five minutes later when Lee Chung-Yong, who had been fouled by Vincent Kompany, launched a free-kick into the box and Gary Cahill nodded the ball just wide of Joe Hart's right hand post.

They kept up their pressure and after winning a corner on 12 minutes, Chung-Yong's cross was met by the head of Kevin Davies. Hart was routed to the spot but the ball fell agonisingly wide of the target.

Gareth Barry saw a shot fly high over the Bolton crossbar a minute later, before a heavy touch from Adam Johnson allowed Jussi Jaaskelainen to claim a loose ball when clean through on goal.

Bolton continued to press forward and when Sturridge picked out Johan Elmander on 20 minutes, the Galatasaray bound striker sent a powerful effort towards goal, only to be denied by a superb reflex save from Hart.

A couple of mishaps from Hart soon went unpunished, before Davies somehow headed wide of the post from six-yards from a Chung-Yong free-kick on the half hour.

City then began to get a foothold in the game and should have taken the lead on 33 minutes. Dedryck Boyata's run down the right flank ended with a cross inside the six-yard box, where Barry could only succeed in heading against the crossbar.

They then had a triple chance to break the deadlock on 38 minutes, only for Jaaskelainen to keep out a strikes from Yaya Toure and Tevez before Silva blasted over the bar.

However, the visitors did break the deadlock a minute before the break as Johnson's corner evaded Kompany before hitting Lescott in the face and looping into the back of the Bolton net.

Cahill saw a volley blocked two minutes after the break as the hosts tried to get themselves level, before Sturridge saw a shot fly narrowly wide of the target three minutes later.

Jaaskelainen blocked shots from Silva and Tevez, before Dzeko doubled the City lead just after the hour with his first touch of the game after coming on as a substitute.

Barry played the ball across the Wanderers box and when Cahill failed to clear the danger, Dzeko sneaked in to poke the ball beyond Jaaskelainen in front of the travelling supporters.

City were denied a third on 69 mintes when Tevez's strike was blocked by a combination of Jaaskelainen and Knight, but things were looking good for the visitors.

Elmander was replaced by Tamir Cohen on 71 minutes, with the club record signing receiving a mixed reception from the home supporters as he looks set to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.

Ivan Klasnic, on as a substitute for Matt Taylor, fired a shot wide with ten minutes remaining, before Sturridge sent another effort just wide moments later.

The game was over as a spectacle with four minutes remaining, though, as Sturridge saw shown his marching orders for a high challenge on Dzeko.

That was to be the last major action of the game as Bolton's once promising season ended with a touch of disappointment, with Owen Coyle's side finishing in 14th position.
