Bolton boss Owen Coyle has confirmed he is interested in signing Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for Boro this term and with Gary Cahill likely to leave the Reebok Stadium in the summer, Wanderers have been linked with a move for Williams, who worked under Coyle during a loan spell at Burnley in 2009.

Speaking at his weekly press conference on Thursday afternoon, Coyle admitted he holds an interest in the player, but no concrete offer has been made.

"Rhys Williams is a player I had on loan at Burnley when he was a young kid from Middlesbrough," Coyle said.

"He did terrific for me and he's one of 15 or 20 players that we've looked at.

"I spoke to (Boro chief executive) Keith Lamb on Wednesday because we have a fantastic relationship with Middlesbrough, and I spoke to Keith to say that's exactly where we are.

"If and when there was anything concrete on that then Middlesbrough would be the first to know."

Should Wanderers land the signature of Williams, he will become the second player to join from Middlesbrough this year, following the arrival of David Wheater in January.
