Reports on Thursday morning suggest Bolton are close to completing the signing of Middlesbrough defender David Wheater.

Wanderers have been chasing the 23-year-old throughout the transfer window, with boss Owen Coyle looking to provide cover for Gary Cahill and Zat Knight at the heart of the Trotters defence.

With Cahill likely to leave the Reebok Stadium in the summer, a long-term replacement for the England international is a priority and Wheater has been touted as a player who will fit the bill.

Bolton are understood to have agreed terms with Wheater and are thought to be closing in on a deal with Boro, allowing for a deal to be completed within the next 48 hours.
