Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy has admitted defeat in his bid to land Middlesbrough's David Wheater, believing the defender is set to join Bolton.

Wolves entered the race to sign the 23-year-old earlier in the week, following news that the player had held talks with Trotters boss Owen Coyle over the weekend.

Aston Villa, Everton and Sunderland have also been credited with holding an interest, but McCarthy believes the player will sign for Bolton.

"I think you'll probably find he'll end up at Bolton and that will be great business for them.," McCarthy said.

Wanderers are understood to have agreed personal terms with the player, but are yet to agree a fee with Middlesbrough, who are reported to be holding out for around £4million.
