Reports on Saturday suggest Bolton are about to open talks with Middlesbrough defender David Wheater about a possible move to the Reebok Stadium.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at the Riverside Stadium in the summer and is expected to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa, Everton, Newcastle United, Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all said to be interested in the defender, who has been called into the England squad on two occasions, but Wanderers are understood to have stolen a march on their rivals.

Wheater was left out of the Middlesbrough side that lost 2-1 at Burton Albion on Saturday and is expected to hold talks with Owen Coyle on Sunday before potentially completing a move early next week. He is expected to cost somewhere in the region of £2.2million.
