Bolton were undone by a late suckerpunch as Maxi Rodriguez's 86th minute strike gave Liverpool a 1-0 win in a drab affair at the Reebok Stadium.

In a rare moment of quality, Fernando Torres sent a cheeky backheel through the legs of Gary Cahill and Rodriguez diverted the ball goalwards, this time through the legs of Jussi Jaaskelainen, to lift Roy Hodgson's side out of the Premier League's bottom three.

It was the visitors who created the first chance of the game when Torres headed over from a Steven Gerrard corner on four minutes and the Spaniard should have been on target just two minutes later.

Capitalising on a misplaced pass from Zat Knight, the ball was fed to Torres but after turning inside Knight, he stabbed his shot well wide of goal with only Jaaskelainen left to beat.

Wanderers sprung into life with 20 minutes gone and were denied the lead when Pepe Reina leaped to his left to prevent Stuart Holden's stunning volley from the edge of the area reaching the back of his net.

Lee Chung-Yong went down inside the area under a challenge from Jamie Carragher, but referee Martin Atkinson waved play on as the appeals fell on deaf ears.

Joe Cole and then Gerrard both saw shots fly over the Bolton crossbar soon after and Fabrice Muamba sliced an effort well wide of the target at the other end as neither side looked likely to break the deadlock.

Reina was then on hand to stop two free-kick's from Matt Taylor, before a Sotirios Kyrgiakos header in first half stoppage time brought a fine diving save out of Jaaskelainen as the teams went in goalless at the break.

The second half started in the same poor fashion as the first ended, with no mentionable activity until the hour mark when Cole was forced off the field with a hamstring injury and David Ngog coming on to replace him.

Soon after that change, Kyrgiakos came close to opening the scoring from a corner as his looping header sailed narrowly over the bar.

Liverpool once again came close on 71 minutes as Torres knocked down a cross from Gerrard and Rodriguez sent a spectacular overhead kick just over the Wanderers bar.

At the other end, Johan Elmander saw a shot from 25-yards deflected just wide of Reina's left-hand post, before Knight headed over from the resulting corner.

Kevin Davies should have given the hosts the lead five minutes later as he got on the end of a Taylor free-kick, but his glancing header from close range went inches wide of the far post, giving Liverpool a lifeline.

That miss proved costly as Hodgson's side won the game inside the final five minutes when Torres nutmegged Cahill, allowing Rodriguez to poke the ball beyond Jaaskelainen infront of the 4,500 travelling supporters behind the goal.

Cahill and Fabrice Muamba both saw efforts deflect into the hands of Reina in stoppage time, but, after four minutes of added time, the referee brought the game to an end, signalling Bolton's first home defeat of the campaign.

The result means Wanderers occupy 10th spot in the Premier League after the opening ten games, one point and four places better off than at the same stage last season.
