Bolton have moved to secure the services of Danny Ward, with the young striker signing a new three-year contract with the club.

Ward joined Wanderers from Leeds United as a 15-year-old and made his first team debut as a substitute on the opening day of last season.

He spent the second half of the campaign on loan at League 1 Swindon Town, where he scored 9 goals in 32 appearances, as they narrowly missed out on promotion, losing in the play-off final to Millwall.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle says the 18-year-old is expected to join a Championship club when the Football League loan window opens on Wednesday, but he is delighted to have got the striker signed on.

"I have tremendous belief in Danny but it's fair to say that he needs to go and get some Championship experience," Coyle told the club's official website.

"He was involved in our squad throughout pre-season and did ever so well but with the players that we have in front of him at the moment then it makes sense for him to go out on loan.

"He can now go out on an emergency loan, which covers the next three months, and I know that when he comes back then I will get a far better player.

"Danny did ever so well with Swindon in League One and he was a big part of their promotion push which saw them reach the play-off final.

"If he goes out and gets some games then he will come back and be ready to push into our first-team.

"There have been numerous clubs throughout the Championship that have been after him, so it is likely that he will go out on loan in the next week or so."

Before the transfer window closed last week, Coyle admitted that as many as sixteen clubs were chasing the loan signing of Ward, but Burnden Aces understand Coventry City is the player's most likely destination.
