Owen Coyle was delighted with the character of his Bolton side after their unlikely 2-2 draw with Birmingham City.

Already trailing 1-0, Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off for a slap on City goalscorer Roger Johnson. Craig Gardner doubled their lead after the break, before late goals from Kevin Davies (pen) and Robbie Blake salvaged a point for the Trotters.

Speaking after the game, Coyle admitted the referee had no choice but to dismiss Jaaskelainen and believed his side were worthy of their point.

"It (the slap) was very out of character but it was clearly a sending-off, no doubt about it," Coyle told Sky Sports.

"What I would say is that Jussi saved us last week when he was the architect of the three points against West Ham.

"He knows he's done wrong but he's made a mistake and he will bounce back.

"We know the courage these boys have got and the bravery and desire. They've dragged themselves into the game.

"If you analyse that game, they'll probably feel that they're probably worthy of the win.

"But, with 2-0 down and with ten men, we're absolutely delighted to have salvaged a point from it."
