After making his debut against Bulgaria on Friday, Bolton defender Gary Cahill is hoping to start against Switzerland on Tuesday.

Cahill came on as a 56th minute substitute for the injured Michael Dawson on Friday night and impressed alongside Everton's Phil Jagielka at the heart of the defence.

With John Terry and Rio Ferdinand both out of the squad through injury, Cahill is hoping to hold off competition from Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott and make his first start in England colours against the Swiss.

"From the time you are a little lad you stride to play for your country, so why not put me in against Switzerland? I'm ready for it definitely," Cahill said.

"I think the opportunity is there for a new back four for England.

"I've got little bit of age on my side and the more experienced boys can show me the ropes.

"I've come on and played, made that debut and that's a big thing after constantly thinking, 'when's it going to come?' I can learn from the boys in front of me now.

"I hope to be in the England set-up for years to come."

England boss Fabio Capello has been tipped to start with Upson on Tuesday night, but the Italian believes the Wanderers defender has a bright future ahead of him and could be given his opportunity to shine.

"I have to decide about the position but Cahill is young and has a big future," Capello said.

"It is good for the players who have not played a lot of games to come into the team when we are doing well. It is not so easy when we are not."
