Bolton defender Gary Cahill won his first England cap on Friday night in a 4-0 victory over Bulgaria at Wembley.

Despite making the squad on four previous occasions, Cahill had been overlooked by boss Fabio Capello.

However, injury to Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Dawson ten minutes into the second half prompted a change at the heart of the England defence, with Cahill coming on to partner Everton's Phil Jagielka.

A hat-trick from Jermain Defoe and a strike from Adam Johnson put England top of their qualifying group ahead of the game against Switzerland in Basel on Tuesday night, a game which Cahill will now be hoping to start.
