Bolton have confirmed the release of Danny Shittu after reaching an agreement with the defender.

Shittu joined Wanderers from Watford in the summer of 2008 for a fee of £2million but failed to hold down a regular place in the side, making just 12 appearances during his two-year stay at the Reebok Stadium.

He failed to make a single appearance for the club last season, with his last appearance coming in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on the final day of the 2008/09 season.

The player had been linked with a move to Turkish side Kayserispor, but he is now expected to stay in England with a number of clubs interested in taking him on a free transfer.
