Reports on Thursday indicate former Bolton manager Gary Megson has returned to the club, occupying the controversial Director of Football role.

Megson was sacked as Wanderers boss in December, with the club languishing in the bottom three of the Premier League following a poor start to the season.

After failing to agree a compensation package with the club, he was placed on a 12-month period of gardening leave. However, it has now emerged that he will begin work behind the scenes at the Reebok Stadium following successful talks with club chairman Phil Gartside and owner Eddie Davies.

The appointment will allow new boss Owen Coyle to concentrate on building a squad capable of challenging for European football next season, with Megson responsible for bringing backroom staff to the club.

A press conference has been arranged for 12 noon on this April Fools' Day, where the news of Megson's new role is expected to be confirmed.
