Bolton's 56-year wait for a league win at Anfield continues after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Goals in either half from Dirk Kuyt and Kevin Davies(og) gave Rafa Benitez's side the three points, leaving Wanderers just one point above the bottom three in 16th place.

Owen Coyle's side started well at Anfield and could have taken an early lead through Tamir Cohen, but he was shrugged off the ball at the vital moment.

At the other end, David Ngog could have given the hosts the lead. Having worked his way behind the Wanderers defence, his cross was deflected up into the air and Jussi Jaaskelainen only just prevented the ball from landing in the net.

Dirk Kuyt would have broken the deadlock had he made contact with an Emiliano Insua cross before Bolton almost took a shock lead.

After stealing the ball on half-way, Lee Chung-Yong ran at the Liverpool defence and after beating three defenders he rounded goalkeeper Pepe Reina before seeing his goalbound shot cleared off the line by the outstretched foot of Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

That clearance proved vital as the hosts went up the other end and broke the deadlock courtesy of Kuyt.

Insua's deep cross was headed back across goal by Alberto Aquilani and Kuyt prodded the ball home, despite Gary Cahill's attempt to clear off the line.

Matt Taylor twice came close to equalising before the break, both prior to Chung-Yong being shown a yellow card for diving inside the penalty area. Replays, however, showed the South Korean may have been clipped.

After the restart, the hosts were presented with a great opportunity to double their lead.

After Cahill slipped on halfway, Albert Riera raced down the left flank before crossing for Steven Gerrard. His shot was smartly stopped by Jaaskelainen and Ngog somehow missed the rebound, seeing his scuffed shot go behind courtesy of the crossbar.

Gerrard again brought Jaaskelainen into action soon after, before Liverpool sealed the win in fortunate circumstances.

Having cleared a corner, the Wanderers looked out of trouble. Insua struck the loose ball from distance, with the ball deflecting off Kevin Davies, going through the legs of Gretar Steinsson and finding its way into Jaaskelainen's bottom right hand corner.

Substitute Vladimir Weiss saw a 25-yard free-kick go over the crossbar for Wanderers late on, but the hosts took the points which leave them just one short of Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth Champions League spot.

Next up for Bolton is the visit of Fulham next Saturday in what could prove to be an interesting weekend in the Premier League's relegation battle.
