Owen Coyle secured his first win as Bolton manager as second half goals from Gretar Steinsson and Johan Elmander gave Wanderers a 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

The visitors were forced into a change before kick-off, with Jon Fortune taking the place of Marcel Seip who was injured in the warm up.

In a first half of few chances, it was the unlikely figure of Jlloyd Samuel who had the first opportunity of the game but he just failed to meet Lee Chung-Yong's cross with his attempted diving header.

Ivan Klasnic forced United goalkeeper Mark Bunn into his first save of the afternoon on 18 minutes before the visitors had a great chance to break the deadlock.

James Harper picked out Henri Camara beyond the Wanderers backline and when one-on-one with Jussi Jaaskelainen, the Senegal striker lifted his strike over the crossbar.

Then, at the other end, Klasnic picked out Samuel in an advanced position but after opting to cut inside onto his stronger left foot, the chance had gone.

Klasnic had a couple more efforts before the break, but the breakthrough finally came just three minutes after the break.

A good move involving Chung-Yong allowed Kevin Davies to pick out Steinsson's forward run and after working a sight of goal the Icelander shot through Bunn's legs from an acute angle.

That goal appeared to ease the tension around the Reebok Stadium as Wanderers began to look comfortable.

Neither side made any serious threat to the other from then on, leading to both managers making attacking substitutions in a bid to break the other down.

Then, just six minutes from time, Elmander, a substitute for Klasnic, latched onto a pass from Chung-Yong before firing past Bunn in a move similar to that of the first goal.

Chris Basham and Mustapha Riga were given late cameo roles by Bolton boss Coyle as Wanderers advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in four years.
