Bolton caretaker manager Chris Evans has ruled out any possibility of him taking the job on a permanent basis.

Following the dismissal of Gary Megson on Wednesday, Evans and Wanderers head coach Steve Wigley will take charge of first team affairs until a new manager is found.

Their first game will be the FA Cup tie against Lincoln City on Saturday, but Evans admits he will not be applying for the job and following in the footsteps of Sammy Lee, after he succeeded Sam Allardyce in 2007.

"I will not be applying for this job. I have no intention of being the manager of Bolton Wanderers," Evans told Sky Sports.

"But equally I would like to feel I am professional enough to do the best possible job I can during the time given to me.

"Steve and I come from similar backgrounds and have similar ideas. We have work to do and will continue to do that as best we can."

After ending a 17-year spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers to join Bolton, Evans admitted he was shocked to hear the news of Megson's sacking, but is professional enough to take care of the job in hand.

"I am surprised to be in this position. Gary called me yesterday with the news," he added.

"I am disappointed as well as he gave me an opportunity to come here. But the decision was made by people over and above us.

"The issues with regards to the fans does not help. But now is the time to look forward.

"I have a professional job to do. I am under contract and will do whatever job is asked of me to the best of my ability.

"The remit we have is that we act in the best interests of the club until a new manager comes in so we are well prepared for each game."
