Bolton once again failed to hold on to a lead as they drew 1-1 at Burnley on Boxing Day.

Matt Taylor put Wanderers infront just before the half-hour with a superb 30-yard free-kick, but David Nugent equalised 11 minutes after the break as both sides had to settle for a point.

The game started a little slowly, with neither side breaking into the final third. Steven Fletcher had the best of the early opportunities, shooting over Jussi Jaaskelainen's crossbar.

Nugent went down under a challenge from Gary Cahill on 18 minutes, but referee Chris Foy waved play on with Nugent clearly looking for it.

Midway through the half, Wanderers had their first chance of the game. Ivan Klasnic found Kevin Davies on the left flank and after cutting inside he curled an effort just wide of Brian Jensen's far post.

Tamir Cohen twice shot straight at Jensen and Chris Basham also saw a shot saved, before Burnley spurned a great chance to take the lead.

An indecisive Zat Knight was caught by Wade Elliott, who, after working his way into the box, crossed for Fletcher who poked the ball wide from inside the six yard box.

The hosts were then made to pay for that miss as Bolton took the lead against the run of play. Andre Bikey fouled Kevin Davies and Taylor stepped up to sent the ball into the top corner from 30-yards.

Then, just before the break, Kevin Davies found Klasnic only for him to be denied when one-on-one with Jensen.

Owen Coyle's side came out the better side after the restart and were almost level within a matter of minutes.

Fletcher picked up the loose ball and unleashed an unstoppable 25-yard drive which crashed back off the crossbar with Jaaskelainen beaten.

He then missed another guilt-edged chance to equalise when he skied over from close range after a superb run down the left flank from Chris Eagles.

With 56 minutes on the clock though, they were level. Tyrone Mears beat Paul Robinson down the Burnley right before crossing for an unmarked Nugent to head past Jaaskelainen.

Nugent came close to giving Burnley the lead soon after, but Jaaskelainen denied him his glory with a fine double save after failing to hold Eagles' effort.

Cohen, Gary Cahill and substitute Mark Davies all came close to giving Bolton a late winner, but neither side could break through and both had to settle for a point.

Wanderers return to action on Tuesday night when they host Hull City at the Reebok Stadium.
