Bolton have been knocked out of the Carling Cup after being on the wrong end of a 4-0 hammering by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda had the hosts 2-0 up at the break and further goals from Deco and Didier Drogba sealed their passage into the last 8 of the competition.

From the kick-off, Chelsea went straight for the throat as Joe Cole brought a save from Bolton goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

Whilst they dominated the early possession, they failed to make their chances count until the 15th minute when Paulo Ferreira did well out wide before crossing for Kalou to head home from close range.

Bolton almost hit back immediately as Gretar Steinsson's low cross evaded everybody in the Chelsea backline, falling to Matt Taylor, only for Hilario to make a superb stop with his face, leading to him leaving the action a few minutes later.

With 25 minutes on the clock, the hosts doubled their advantage and the tie looked over as a contest already.

Kalou's cross caused panic in the Bolton defence and after the ball rebounded off Zat Knight, Malouda reacted quickest to head past Al Habsi.

Kalou went in search of Chelsea's third before the break and he came close with a curling effort after some nice build up play involving Michael Ballack.

After a poor first half from Bolton, Gary Megson responded by changing to a 4-4-2 formation, replacing the ineffective Steinsson with Johan Elmander.

Ten minutes after the restart, Mark Davies came close to pulling a goal back but his low drive was stopped by Chelsea's substitute goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

Chelsea then hit Bolton on the counter and Daniel Sturridge had the chance to finish the tie, but after turning away from Knight he sent his shot wide, before sending another effort wide just a minute later.

Still, Bolton went in search of a lifeline and Ricardo Gardner saw a shot cleared off the line by Branislav Ivanovic on 66 minutes.

However, they were once again hit on the counter attack as Cole broke down the left flank before crossing for Deco to strike home.

Ivan Klasnic, who scored his first goal for Bolton on Sunday, came close to a consolation inside the final five minutes, but his shot came back off the post before his side's night was made even worse.

Cole once again broke down the wing before crossing this time for Didier Drogba to rise highest and head past Al Habsi to make the final score 4-0 to the Blues.

The result puts Chelsea into the quarter finals of the competition and the two sides will meet again on Saturday, this time in the Premier League at the Reebok Stadium.
