Bolton have turned down a loan move, thought to be from Middlesbrough, for defender Andy O'Brien.

The 30-year-old has yet to feature this season and has been linked with a temporary move away from the Reebok Stadium.

Wanderers boss Gary Megson has confirmed that an approach was received, but O'Brien would not be leaving the club.

"There's been one or two clubs reported to be interested and I've had a call from one Championship club, but I've told them 'no' and I've told Andy he won't be going out on loan," Megson said.

The Irishman has undergone surgery on a hernia over the international break and Megson hopes to have the defender available as soon as possible.

"He was having a few problems so we've got that done during this period where there are no games," he said.

"Whether it heals in time for Saturday I'm not sure, but if it doesn't it won't be ongoing after that."
