Bolton boss Gary Megson has issued a warning to Johan Elmander, insisting he has got to earn his place in the side.

The club record signing scored his first goal of 2009 as Wanderers overcame West Ham United in the Carling Cup last week, but faces competition from Ivan Klasnic and captain Kevin Davies for the forward role.

With Davies one of the first names on the teamsheet, Elmander has been forced to sit on the substitutes bench in recent games, watching Klasnic take his position.

Megson has defended his striker, but has demanded more from Elmander as he looks to get himself back in the team.

"Johan is part of the squad but he needs to accept like everyone else that he has got to deliver," said Megson.

"It doesn't matter to me how much he cost, where he came from, reputation. He has to deliver. He has got to start doing more. He has got a great touch, great awareness but he has got to start doing a lot more for us.

"We know what we are getting with Kevin Davies. We know his quality in the air, the size, power and pace of him and, most of all, the work-rate that Kevin puts in.

"It doesn't matter to me whether Johan is an international player from Sweden, or whether they have cost a lot of money, or whether they are young players who have cost nothing."

Elmander's goal against West Ham was just his sixth in 36 appearances since his £8.2million move from Toulouse.
