Bolton boss Gary Megson is confident defender Gary Cahill will commit his long-term future to the club.
The Wanderers boss revealed last month that the 23-year-old was in talks over a new deal at the Reebok and Megson believes the gamble to sign Cahill from Aston Villa paid off.
"We're speaking to Gary about trying to get him sorted - I definitely think he will be here for the long term," Megson said.
"Hopefully, it will be done sooner rather than later.
"I have been delighted with him since we brought him here, when he had only played 17 Premier League games. He was all about potential.
"We were in a position where people probably looked at it as being a strange signing, bringing in a young inexperienced player, but he has been terrific.
"That's the kind of player I want to build the team around. That's what we're trying to do."
Cahill has made 51 appearances since joining Bolton in January 2008, scoring three times.
