Bolton were victorious on Dutch soil as goals from Sam Ricketts and Kevin Davies gave them a 2-1 victory over FC Den Bosch.

As the pre-season schedule stepped up a gear, 7 of the 15 Wanderers players on show played the full 90 minutes, including summer signings Sean Davis and Zat Knight.

The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and should have taken an early lead through Mark Davies, but he put his effort over the bar after a good build up from Jlloyd Samuel and Matt Taylor.

Den Bosch's on-loan striker Fabio Caracciocolo looked lively in the final third and forced Ali Al Habsi into a smart stop 10 minutes in with a flick header.

At the other end, Brahim Zaari had to be alert, pushing Johan Elmander's header wide of goal.

Midway through the first half, Wanderers came close. Davis' free-kick evaded the heads of Kevin Davies and Elmander, before Knight fired over the rebound from close range.

But Gary Megson's side didn't have to wait much longer to get the breakthrough, and it came through the unlikely source of the debutant, Ricketts.

Ricketts rose highest to meet Davis' corner and open his account for Wanderers within 28 minutes of his debut.

Moments after the game had restarted, Den Bosch should have been level, Paco van Moorsel failed to make the most of an error by Al Habsi and Wanderers kept their lead going into the break.

Megson made three changes at the interval, with Adam Bogdan, Paul Robinson and Gavin McCann coming on to replace Al-Habsi, Samuel and Mark Davies.

Bolton almost doubled their lead within seconds of the restart, but Zaari pushed Taylor's fierce strike away after a good run from Elmander.

Substitute McCann, who scored against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, almost made it two-in-two for pre-season, but Zaari was alert again to palm away his stinging volley.

But Zaari was beaten just before the hour as Kevin Davies added the second. After Elmander had picked out Taylor, the wide-man rounded the Den Bosch 'keeper before squaring for Davies to tap home.

Gretar Steinsson came on to replace Ricketts for the final 17 minutes, and just as the game looked to by dying down, the hosts pulled one back.

Caracciolo tried an audacious effort from outside the area, but saw his effort flick up off McCann and loop over Bogdan in the Wanderers goal.

That goal threatened to product a frantic finish, but neither side carved out any more opportunities and Wanderers claimed a deserved victory in Holland.

They return to action on Friday evening when they face more Dutch opposition, this time in the shape of FC Eindhoven.
