Fabrice Muamba played 77 minutes as England U21s lost to their German counterparts in the European U21 Championship final.
Stuart Pearce's side, who were missing regulars Joe Hart, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Fraizer Campbell through suspension, were outclassed by their opposition, as goals from Gonzalo Castro, Mesut Ozil and a late double from Sandro Wagner gave the German's a resounding 4-0 victory.
Muamba was replaced by Everton's Jack Rodwell with the score at 2-0, but Pearce's decision to change to a more attacking formation backfired as Wagner's brace ended the tie.
The Wanderers midfielder is now expected to take a couple of weeks off before returning to pre-season training with Wanderers ahead of the friendly schedule at the end of next month.
