Gary Cahill has become the first Bolton player to be called into the senior England squad in seven years.

With Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand dropping out with a calf injury, England boss Fabio Capello has drafted in the 23-year-old as cover.

Cahill will meet up with his international teammates on Tuesday evening and will compete with Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott for a place alongside John Terry in Saturday's game in Kazakhstan.

Speaking about his shock call-up, the Wanderers defender has expressed his delight at the honour.

"I was at home and I got a phone call from the FA saying that they wanted me in the squad," Cahill said.

"I've had to get a few tools together - the boots and the shin pads - and now I am really looking forward to the opportunity. I'll travel down this afternoon and link-up with the rest of the squad tonight.

"I know a couple of the lads already like James Milner, Ashley Young and Gareth Barry.

"It's come around so quickly that I haven't had the time to take it all in, but no doubt that when I'm sat in the hotel room tonight then it will hit home that I'm actually in the England squad.

"But like I say, I'm just looking forward to going down there and doing my very best. I'm thankful that I have got the chance and I'm determined to take it with both hands.

"I've had a good season and I've worked really hard. I've been in the provisional squad twice before and then this third time I was included once again, so I'm obviously delighted to get the call.

"It has just capped off a great year and to have the chance to play for your country is any footballer's dream. Making the squad is an achievement that I'm very proud of."

The last Wanderers player to be called into the England squad was Michael Ricketts back in 2002.
