Ariza Makukula says he would be happy to return to Benfica in the summer after failing to impress during his loan spell at Bolton.

The 28-year-old Portugal international has struggled to establish himself in the Wanderers side since his January switch, but is determined to force his way back into Gary Megson's plans before the end of the season.

"Things haven't happened like I expected, but I don't feel bad," Makukula told Antena 1.

"Football is like that and you have to carry on working.

"Down there (Benfica) you have good players who play well, like I used to. As far as I'm concerned, I do respect all of them, but I'm involved in another war.

"I am not the one that will make a decision at the end of the season because it doesn't depend on me.

"Benfica are a great club and I would be proud (to go back).

"Despite the fact that I haven't been playing a lot for Bolton, I didn't start the last two or three games, I am still the same and feel I have settled day by day.

"My objectives are to play and make the most of every minute in order to be called up again."

Makukula has made five appearances for the Trotters to date, failing to score.
