Gary Cahill is hopeful his recent performances have been good enough to earn him a call up to the England squad.

The 23-year-old was a member of Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man squad for last month's friendly with Spain, but ultimately missed out on the final cut.

With Saturday's visit to West Bromwich Albion on the horizon, Cahill is hopeful that another good performance at the Hawthorns will put him in the frame for the friendly with Slovakia next weekend.

"I have got a foot in with England now and I'm hungry to get involved and keep myself in the frame," Cahill told The Bolton News.

"I'd like to be involved in there somehow. It's down to my own performances, after that it is out of my hands."

Capped at various youth levels for England, Cahill admits he was disappointed to miss out on the final squad last month, but believes he would adapt well after experiencing international football earlier in his career.

"It works exactly the way it did when I was playing at Under-19s, 20s or 21 level," he said.

"The main squad is picked and then you have your stand-bys. If anyone drops out, then you get drafted in.

"After the game, the doctor gives the okay that I am fit and ready for selection and then if they need me, I'll get the phone call."

Despite being on the fringes of the main squad, Cahill insists he is not getting complacent and hopes to continue his impressive form with Bolton.

"It's down to my own performances and then to the manager to pick his team," he explained.

"Firstly, I have got to play well for my club but I feel like it is within my grasp now. I won't give up either way.

"It shows what a great decision it was to come here to Bolton. It has worked out well from a personal point of view."
