It is understood Bolton duo Kevin Davies and Gary Cahill just fell short of making the England squad for last week's friendly with Spain.

The Wanderers pair were named in Fabio Capello's initial 32-man squad, but ultimately missed out on the final 23-man squad which travelled to the game.

Despite missing out this time, Trotters boss Gary Megson believes it is only a matter of time before they feature for their country.

"It was tremendously encouraging," Megson said.

"I was disappointed they didn't make the main squad, but it's an incentive to keep plugging away.

"We keep hearing Kevin doesn't score enough, but he's got nine now and is right on the heels of the country's top scorers.

"And it's only a matter of time until Gary breaks through."

The last Bolton player to be called into the England squad was Michael Ricketts, who played 45 minutes against Holland back in February 2002.
