Gary Megson has explained his reasons for handing Kevin Davies the Bolton captaincy following Kevin Nolan's switch to Newcastle United.

The Wanderers boss has lavished praise on the 31-year-old, claiming the striker leads by example and wears his heart on his sleeve.

Davies capped his first game as skipper by scoring twice in the 3-2 victory over Tottenham last weekend and Megson believes the Trotters' leading goalscorer is a rolemodel to youngsters.

"He was a stand-out but not a shoo-in," Megson told the club's official website.

"Matty Taylor did the job a month ago and did it really well, Andy O'Brien and Jussi Jaaskelainen were candidates and there's Gary Cahill, who at some point will end up captaining a side.

"We've decided to go with Kevin and I think that it is the right decision. Some of the things that I hear about him, I find ridiculous. He is the most fouled player in the Premier League, yet I bet there are not too many people who foul him that get booked.

"What we encourage here is that when players hit the ground, that they get straight up and don't show they are hurt. We don't like all the rolling around and play-acting and the sooner that everybody shows the qualities that Kevin Davies has in that respect, the better.

"It's not his fault that he is strong, honest and committed. They aren't faults, they are big strengths and people have got to start getting away from the perception of Kevin Davies and look at the reality.

"He is the most fouled player in the Premier League and he gets kicked from pillar to post, yet he has only been booked three times this season. People need to start waking up to that and in terms of a captain he is everything you could wish for.

"He's got nine goals and he's had a couple disallowed. He gets hold of the ball, he competes and you know you are not going to get an easy time from him - that's what we want from all of our players."
