Bolton boss Gary Megson admitted his decision to leave Kevin Davies on the bench didn't pay off as Bolton lost 3-0 to Liverpool.

The 31-year-old was replaced in the starting line-up by Fabrice Muamba, although he did come on as a substitute for the second half.

Megson said he decided to leave Davies on the bench, with one eye on the game against Wigan on Sunday, but the move backfired.

"We wanted to play a little bit differently but it didn't work," Megson said.

"We wanted to use the pace of Ricardo Gardner and Matt Taylor and try and cause problems out wide rather than directly through the middle, but we didn't cause them any problems.

"The team was also picked with an eye on the fact that we've got two games in the space of 48 hours."

Davies, who has scored five goals so far this season, is expected to win his place back for the Wigan game.
