Former Bolton midfielder Gary Speed could be forced into retiring from the game after being ruled out for the rest of the season.

Speed, now of Sheffield United, picked up a back injury at the end of November and it has now been revealed he needs surgery on the problem.

Speaking about the injury, Blades boss Kevin Blackwell believes the injury could be career threatening.

"Gary's season is finished," Blackwell said.

"It is a severe injury and a major blow which leaves us with a massive hole to fill in the side.

"It could be career threatening and Gary may now decide that's it.

"Wear and tear catches up with everyone in this game sooner or later and it's such a shame because he was enjoying his football and playing well.

"But Gary is in a lucky position and has options on his table."

The former Wales international is currently being linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers, with a view to a possible coaching role under new manager Sam Allardyce.
