Bolton fell to their first defeat of the season as Michael Owen gave Newcastle a 1-0 victory at St.James' Park.

Shay Given saved a Kevin Nolan penalty with the game goalless, knocking the stuffing out of Wanderers before Owen's 71st minute header gave the hosts all three points.

The home side began brightly, but Gary Cahill and Andy O'Brien were alert from the get-go, blocking goalbound efforts from Obafemi Martins and Damien Duff respectively.

James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia also had efforts blocked by the Wanderers rearguard, before Bolton's biggest goalscoring threat was put out of the game.

Johan Elmander was involved in a collision inside the Newcastle penalty area with Steven Taylor and goalkeeper Shay Given, he received threatment but was unable to continue, being replaced by Gavin McCann.

As the interval approached, Jlloyd Samuel, who has yet to score for Bolton, had a great chance to break the deadlock, but his curling effort was off target.

Fabrice Muamba also had an effort diverted wide by Taylor as Wanderers went into the break on the back of an impressive ten minute spell.

Minutes after the restart Martins limped off with an apparent groin strain, being replaced by Owen, making his first appearance of the season.

But the optimism of the home fans soon turned sour when Taylor handled inside the area after Joey O'Brien flicked on Gretar Steinsson's cross.

Wanderers skipper Nolan took the resulting spot kick but Given pulled off a superb save low to his left to keep his side on level terms.

A sense of relief could be felt around St.James' Park and the home fans got behind their side, luckily for Bolton, Owen could only head straight at Jussi Jaaskelainen when presented with a golden opportunity.

However, the England international broke the deadlock with his next chance, flicking Geremi's cross past Jaaskelainen after Bolton failed to clear from a corner.

Milner could have wrapped up the points moments later but somehow headed wide from inside the six-yard box before Nolan failed to convert on two seperate occasions for Bolton.

An equaliser looked to be on its way, but referee Steve Bennett called time and Gary Megson's side lost for the first time this season.

They now look forward to Tuesday evening and a Carling Cup 2nd round tie against League 1 outfit Northampton Town, who were involved in a goalless draw with Millwall this afternoon.
