Gary Megson has defended Jussi Jaaskelainen after the Bolton goalkeeper's big mistake in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool.

Jaaskelainen fumbled a Steven Gerrard shot into the back of his own net to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead early on at the Reebok, but Megson has refused to blame his goalkeeper who later made two excellent saves to deny Ryan Babel.

"Jussi is a fantastic goalkeeper," said Megson. "He made two great saves after that (mistake).

"He has held his hands up but these balls move quite a bit in the air and it came back and hit him in the face.

"The first goal can be vital and it took the wind out of our sails. We got picked off rather too easily."

Tamir Cohen scored a late colsolation for Bolton, but with another defeat on their record, Megson believes the run in to the end of the season will be tough for his players and hopes they have enough to stay in the Premier League.

"It is going to be close from now until the end of the season," Megson continued.

"We have 10 tough games coming up, as have the rest of the teams down there."
