Bolton boss Gary Megson was delighted to take three points in his sides 4-1 victory over Wigan.

An own goal from Paul Scharner was cancelled out by Denny Landzaat, before Kevin Nolan, Kevin Davies and Nicolas Anelka completed the scoring.

Anelka also missed a penalty with the scores level at 1-1 midway through the first-half.

The win moves Bolton move up to 14th in the Premier League, and Megson was happy with the result, despite his side not being at their best.

"In terms of performance we can do better. In terms of result, that's a great result for us," he told Sky Sports.

"I wouldn't like to give the impression that I think we've got away with it, thrashing maybe not but certainly (it) is a perfectly just result," said Megson.

Straight after the break, the visitors had a five minute spell which saw no fewer than seven corners in succession. Jussi Jaaskelainen kept Bolton's lead at that stage as Bolton weathered the storm.

"I thought that at times we looked a little bit desperate but our desperate defending did keep them out and when they did get past our back lads, Jussi's made one or two really good saves from corners," Megson continued.

After victory over Manchester United in their last home game, Bolton knew it was important to follow up with victory over relegation rivals Wigan and Megson believes you have to beat the teams in and around you if you are to stay in the division.

"It is vital for everybody, we knew the fixtures and results from yesterday and everybody has hard games.

"There are a few teams in this division where you know if you get anything then it's going to be a big bonus but there are other teams that you need to make sure that you are picking up results against and invariably that is the teams that are in and around your own league position.

"Today we have got a good result."
