Sammy Lee has admitted the door is still open for Jussi Jaaskelainen to sign a new contract at the Reebok.

Jaaskelainen has rejected Bolton's offer of a new contract which expires next summer, but has vowed to see out the final year of the deal.

The 32-year-old is the club's longest serving player, after Colin Todd signed him in from VPS Vaasa for £100,000 in 1997.

Lee, who saw Tal Ben Haim join Chelsea after his contract expired this summer, still hopes the Finnish international won't leave in the same way.

"I would hope that would be the case, without a shadow of a doubt," Lee told The Bolton News.

"I've said on many occasions that I don't want to lose any of our quality players and he's one of them."

Aston Villa and Sunderland were both linked with moves for Jaaskelainen over the summer, which caused Lee to make contingency plans incase the Wanderers goalkeeper departed, but since making the decision to see out his contract, the Bolton manager has been pleased with the commitment he has shown.

"He's still got a year of football here and, if five minutes is a long time in politics, in football it's even longer.

"You just have to look at the lad's commitment. It's absolutely fantastic, it really is, his professional attitude is superb. He's a terrific goalkeeper."
