Bolton boss Gary Megson believes Gary Cahill should reject any approaches from the Republic of Ireland and focus on becoming an England regular.

The 23-year-old has been called up to the England squad on three occasions, but has yet to make his international debut.

It has now become public knowledge that the defender is eligible for the Republic of Ireland because of his Irish grandparents, but Megson hopes the Sheffield-born star opts to stick with England.

"He's been made aware of the dual qualification but I hope his ambitions remain with England," Megson told the Daily Star.

"The last time I looked, Sheffield was in the middle of England.

"It's just my opinion of course and it's up to him. It's purely a decision Gary must make but I think he should stick with England."
