WANDERERS HIT WITH UEFA FINE - Thursday 20th March 2008

Bolton have been fined £5,000 following crowd disturbances in their UEFA Cup tie with Atletico Madrid last month.

Many fans who had travelled to the Spanish capital came home with injuries sustained by the heavy approach from police.

Wanderers came out and defended their supporters on the night for their exemplary behaviour, which was backed up by their showing in Lisbon in the last 16.

After the defeat in Lisbon, fans of both sides shook hands and exchanged scarves, with Portuguese officials praising the 1,500 travelling Wanderers.

Speaking after the issue of the fine, a Wanderers spokesman believes the small nature of the fine shows Bolton were on the receiving end of the trouble.

"We believe the level of fine reflects the fact that the vast majority of Wanderers supporters were well behaved.

"It is also a matter of public record that there were no instances of crowd disorder involving Bolton supporters at the UEFA Cup matches in Lisbon, Belgrade, Munich or Skopje."

Atletico have been handed a bigger fine by football's European governing body, something in the region of £15,000.

The Spanish giants have been given the fine after supporters began to throw missiles and fireworks at each other along with severe crowd disturbances and insufficient organisation by the club's security officials.

Riot police were called in to clear the danger from the home fans and restore normality to the stands, which is what a small section of Bolton fans were later involved in.

Small numbers of Bolton fans were also injured on entry to the stadium, with police charging at the turnstiles with the aid of horses and batons.
