BOLTON WANDERERS 1-1 ASTON VILLA

Gary Megson's first game finished all-square after Luke Moore cancelled out Nicolas Anelka's first half strike.

In a poor opening to the match, Anelka opened the scoring in the 21st minute, curling the ball around over the wall and beating Stuart Taylor at his near post.

The French international almost doubled his sides lead 5 minutes later, picking up a pass from El-Hadji Diouf, taking a touch and just shooting past Taylor's far post.

With the first half drawing to a close, Villa's Shaun Maloney forced Jussi Jaaskelainen into a parry before the Wanderers defence cleared.

Half-time was Villa boss Martin O'Neill bring Patrik Berger and Luke Moore on for Isiah Osbourne and Maloney.

Anelka had a sniff of an opportunity when a poor backpass from Martin Laursen was just about cleared by Taylor with Anelka quickly closing him down.

The visitors were level in the 56th minute. Referee Martin Atkinson overruled his linesman and gave a Villa throw, and with Bolton players pushing down field, Gabriel Agbonlahor played the ball across the area for substitute Moore to equalise with his chest.

Kevin Nolan should have scored from six-yards after good work from Anelka and Ricardo Gardner should have done better after a poor clearance from Gareth Barry but the game ended all square with Megson taking a point from his first game.

Bolton's next game sees Manchester City visit the Reebok in the 4th round of the Carling Cup.
