I was listening to Owen Coyle getting interviewed on the radio as I drove home from todays game. After talking about todays game he got asked if any clubs had shown an interest in signing Kevin Davies. Owen said a few clubs had asked about him and Martin O'Neill had phoned him to ask if Davies was available. Owen told them he isn't for sale.
I think he's struggled this season but I don't think we should sell him. Not this window anyway. I'd wait until the end of the season and decide then. We wouldn't get much money for him and I still think he can offer something coming on late on for us. He did quite well today when he came on imo.
What does everyone think? Keep him or sell him?

Good question Dave, for a change. I agree with you, as much as I am very pleased Davies doesn't appear to be a first team starter in the league any more, I wouldn't sell him. I think he can still be a threat coming on late in games if we are a goal down, he can still do a job for us and has a role to play. I also think if we were to get relegated, Kevin Davies could still be a very important player for us. I remember Ian Marshall did a job for us when we were last in the Championship, Davies could be a useful player for us if we go down. If we sold him we'd get next to no money for him. I think he is a likeable person to have around the club. I definitely wouldn't sell him.

Id keep him. He can still do a job, plus he doesnt want to go. Still very much a useful squad player.

Hmmmm I am undecided on it to be honest, if we got a good bid then I would say take the money for him as I don't think we will offer him a new deal in the summer.
Not sure if it was me but he looked up for it today when he came on today,

The rumour kicking around at the arse end of last week was that Sunderland had tabled a £1.5m bid.
If that had been true, we'd have been crazy not to snatch their arm off and send Kevin on his way with our thanks and good wishes.
He is rumoured to be on £40,000 per week, so that would have been £2.3m in the Summer transfer kitty, for offloading a guy who is nearly 35 and is over the hill.

Exactly, I have been saying this the rumours came about. Fantastic servant but the financial aspects of this are far too important to pay somebodu 40k a week to be a bit part player.

In an ideal world id want to keep him as a player coach, fantastic servant to the club...but a club like ours probably could not afford to keep players for sentimental reasons.
I still think he can have a role to play though,so id keep him till the end of the season then offer him wages of around 5-10 thousand a week.If he wants more then id reluctantly let him go.

Sort of echoing what others have said, a great servant to the club, but his time as a first team starter is very much coming to an end.
If he was willing to stay on a lesser contract he would make a great addition to the team as a second half substitute. He's not a afraid to kick fcúk out of the opposing side and is still good for the occasional goal.

If someone offers anything above £1m, we should accept. No time for sentiment at the top level. It's clear that SKD isn't the same player, so as a business, it makes perfect sense to cash in on him, if the right offer is made.

We've kept Ricardo Gardner for long enough!

He'll still be on a decent wage though. I was all for him being given a new deal at the start of last season but we should have learnt from his injury ravaged campaign and not renewed it into this season.
Apparently he got a thigh strain at the start of November that would keep him out for three weeks. It's coming up to three months now. He's been a good player but enough is enough.

Fair enough but my guess is that both Gardner and Blake are on less than half that Davies is on, and wouldn't command a transfer fee, and given that they are both small bit part players it's obvious we should let them go at the end of the season.
Davies is a bit different in financial terms, and he's been the fulcrum of our team for about 8 years.

Looks like we've not heard the last of this just yet. Sunderland Line Up Davies BidSunderland may be about to launch a bid for Bolton captain Kevin Davies, according to Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill.
Davies has been linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium throughout January and with the transfer window slamming shut on Tuesday night, the time has come for clubs to put up or shut up.
O'Neill is a known admirer of the 34-year-old and recently made an enquiry to Wanderers over the availability of the forward.
Trotters boss Owen Coyle confirmed that he has received contact regarding Davies, who he maintains is still in his first team plans.
"I can understand why there is interest in him," Coyle said.
"Martin rang me and I told him Kevin has a big part to play and I don't want him going anywhere. But you can't stop clubs enquiring, I do that myself.
"There is no offer. I think he loves the football club and he's shown that.
"He's been a credit to himself and us. But it's not easy when you are not in the starting line-up."
Despite Coyle's stance, O'Neill admitted he may look to resurrect a deal by making a move for the one-time England international on Monday.
"I did make an enquiry and Owen would obviously want to try to keep him," O'Neill said.
"I may well follow that up tomorrow (Monday) morning."

I know it may make sense financially but I would just hate to see Kev playing for another Premiership team. Imagine if he played against us and scored, that would just be wrong.

To be honest, we should accept an offer of a decent amount. I'm of the view that Kev has the right to choose.
I'd like to keep him to use off the bench, like against Swansea. But if he's not happy, let he go with good grace.

This story has just been on Skysports news. Martin O'Neill is apparently going to make an offer tomorrow. Am really surprised Sunderland want him, but then again O'Neill did sign Emile Heskey for Villa.

Hard to say. International, but mid thirties. 6 months left. Given the current market, and that it's Jan, I'd say £1mil+ certainly. If it's above a million, he should be allowed to talk to them.

I think we would be crazy to sell Davies I really do. If we go down Davies would be a very important player for us next season. Sunderland are not going to offer much of a fee for a 35 year old who is almost out of contract. I hope we won't sell.
