As a youth coach:

Quote
Sammy LEE is ready to make a surprise return to Bolton as their youth team coach – his FOURTH job at the club.

Lee, 52, left the manager’s post at the Reebok after a rocky run of results in 2007, when he stepped up from being Sam Allardyce’s sidekick and tried to be a No.1 in his own right.

But the popular Scouser – out of work since being squeezed by Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool last summer – is now in talks about going back to Wanderers to nurture their next crop of talent.

The Trotters have no axe to grind with Lee and think his vast experience – including a spell with the England set-up – will fit in with their long-term plan to develop home-grown players.

Lee finished his playing career at Bolton before he joined Big Sam’s coaching staff and moved up the ladder.

Wanderers have some top youngsters in their ranks and want Lee to bring them through for first-team action.

I'd actually be very keen on that move.  Lee, it seems to me, has exactly the right personality for that role.

And we really do have some good young players at the minute.  All this stuff bodes well.

I'd say that is excellent news for our youth.

There was never any complaints about his coaching ability.  He's just not managerial material.

Good for our youth team. I'd rather have him coaching with the firsts, he's better than any of the backroom losers we have at present.

A good move IMO to step the youth players up a notch.

Piss poor manager but an excellent coach.

Nobpdy really has a clue about the credentials and day to day performance of our first team coaches. None of us have any idea what part they play in the first team's performance.

Jimbo's not alone though, it's a popular angle of attack when people want to criticise the club.

Coyle comes with his own team, so his team get criticised by association. None of us would know a decent football coach if he came up and bit us on the arse.

If you are being coached by an ex centre half and you have the worst defensive record in the league, chances are it's not going well. We still need a change in that role IMO even yesterday we were still exposed fairly regularly by a crap Liverpool team. We were lucky they couldn't convert.
It's a good move bringing Sammy Lee into that role as that's what good clubs do, they breed a style of football from the bottom up so progression is seamless, and when kids do come through they are asked to play the way are used too.
We are going to be the next Barcelona !  Grin

What you are doing is adding 2 + 2 and making 4, but our defensive problems this season are complex and far reaching.

It doesn't necessarily follow that because the defence has been poor, it's the solution to replace the first team coach, because he used to be a defender in his playing days.

Is he responsible for injuries, loss of form for example? Is he responsible for the club not being able to afford to replace ageing players?

Paul Robinson was a rock for most of last season - this season he has been truly abysmal. It COULD be Steve Davis' fault, but then again, it might not be.

I just think it's too simplistic to blame the backroom staff and it's contentious because - we don't know what goes on behind the scenes.

As for yesterday, I disagree -  Liverpool didn't create chances to convert, I don't think we were "lucky" in any way that they didn't score more.

My worry is that the youth team won't have much respect for him. I mean do you really expect these lads thinking they are bertie big bollocks respecting a man who is like 5'3 tall? I certainly wouldn't take orders from any man who is less than 5'10 tall. I am not convinced this will work out well.

I agree with pretty much everything that has been said so far. He can be involved with the academy, reserves and coaching set up just as long as he never receives a promotion to anywhere near management.

Agree with everyone else! There's no doubts about his ability as a coach and someone of his experience working with the talented set of youngsters we have currently can only be good for them to push them onto the next level. Surely it will only help David Lee and Tony Kelly to carry on doing the good work they are doing

I hope it's the beginning of the end for Tony kelly, I may get some stick for saying it but I just don't like the guy and never will for some reason.

They are both mickey mousers so maybe he had a word with Lee about joining the youth team.

The youth set-up certainly needs some sort of help, we're not exactly churning out the youngsters are we?

My worry would be that they won't have much respect for him since he was one of the most maligned managers in Premier League history.

I'm scared that Gartside is lining him up to replace Coyle in the summer.  Shocked
