Should woem & children first always be the norm.  This ethos was established by “The Titanic” disaster but this wasn’t maritime norm.  Having women & children at sea was still comparatively new when the Titanic sank &, as we all know, there weren’t enough life boats.  A priority system had to be established quickly and there were even some women suffragettes who laterally objected to this sexist attitude.
I certainly agree with the children first dogma, but in this equality age, should we really accept it is reasonable to step aside for a woman.  I think I know how I would react in such circumstances but it is easy to intellectualise behind a computer.
