Following on from our recent intelligent discussion of soap opera characters who you would like to scuttle, I have been thinking about the situation where a female soap character is recast. EastEnders has introduced a new Lucy Beale who has this spoilt rich kid look that tells you she needs a right good seeing to, the old version was very plain and grey. The old Lucy Beale. You wouldn't. The New Lucy Beale. You would. I have noticed that the new actress is nearly always fitter than the original. Here is a further example Lauren Branning from EastEnders: Original with latchkey kid look Upgrade - I'd give her one I don't want to have all the fun and post loads of photos and annoy Manny, so I won't post loads, but I can only think of one downgrade in my time watching soaps. Pippa Fletcher from Home and AwayThe original Pippa left, new, right What is the reason for this upgrade process? It is so unrealistic. If I don't see a bird for ages, she usually looks worse when I see her again, not better. I thought drama was supposed to reflect real life.

They're still supposed to be a depiction of characters in everyday situations. I want to know why the characters bugger off for 6 months and come back with a new mug. Please help.

I turned on the box last night and happened into an epsiode of Eastenders. It must be a sign of me getting old as much as not really watching it anymore, but I didn't have a clue who 80% of the characters were , it was just a load of moody teenagers milling around on the screen.

If we're turning this into a competition then close it. I win by a country fcuking mile. I present to you ... Lucy Robinson of Neighbours fame. From this :- ... to this :-

Oh, and just to add. All soaps are shíte. Hollyoaks is the only one worth watching... and that's only for a hungover five knuckle shuffle on a Sunday lunchtime whilst still lay in bed.

I think your Lucy Robinson example might have also involved a gender change, Paul, from the above evidence.

And it can go the other way..... Not sure if 'Men Behaving Badly' is a soap, but Lesley Ash was lovely before the surgeons go hold of her.

Good point. ... The unisex haircut, aka the mullett, did girls no favours whatsoever. Around that era there were also a set of twins (one married Paul Robinson) and a couple of blonde chicks. One called Annalise and her sister who did a Playboiy shoot. Jeez, being in my early teens around that time I must've ejaculated about a bucket and a half between 5.30pm-6.00pm on weekdays.

First fancied Leslie Ash when she was in a cop series called CATS Eyes, which was a semi-sequel to The Gentle Touch (only saying semi-sequel as The Gentle Touch was made by LWT whilst CATS Eyes was made by TVS but both series had Maggie Forbes as the central character) http://youtu.be/8io_hHIi5NQBut now, no-way... (Edit - link added)

Do they ever have to?
But knowing Dave he would have turned into yet another "abuse Amos" thread - which is a bit pathetic nowadays, especially from a man of his age (i.e. older than a child) therefore, and before he could, I just clarified it by using examples. It is a shame that one has to clarify subjects just because of the fact that someone will abuse the system.
