As you may have seen Tesco's shares plummeted 20% today after poor sales over Christmas. People have clearly taken their custom elsewhere. What do people think of Tesco, do you like them or not?

I can't stand them. They embody everything that is wrong with this country.
Lets start with the adverts. That horrible eleirevator music, bland white screen and bloody thicko northern accent. Tescuuuu. Hate it.
I usually shop at Asda and quite often buy meatballs. I made the mistake of picking up meatballs from Tesco once. As I was browning them in the pan, loads of soupy yellow fat came out of them - it was economy burger meat moulded into spherical shape. I mention this to people who shop at Tesco and they all say that Tesco meat is rank compared to other supermarkets.
They go out of their way to crush local traders, and while other supermarkets are guilty of this, Tesco have taken it to different levels.
They don't pay their fair share of tax.
Their rotisserie is a joke compared to Asda.
Their cigarettes and tobacco are a rip off.
ASDA till I die.

The extent of antony worrall thompson's kleptomania is now becoming apparent. Tescos shares dropped for no other reason than him. Just to add that their cat litter is far more superior than Asda although for everything else I do believe that Tesco are better. Their delivery drivers are also better looking than that lot Adsa employ

Asda seem to employ the kind of folk who like Loose women, 2 weeks in Benidorm & 40 B&H a day. You know the kind - working class scum. Tescos on the other hand do tend to employ people like that nice lady from next door, or your mates mum who drives a Volvo. People who are just a bit more classier
You're right on the meat at Tescos though - it's shite

I'm working class and proud and take objection to the phrase "working class scum". I am sure there are lots of people who work at Asda who are the mothers of friends and so on. I don't think someone driving a Volvo is better than someone who smokes and goes to Benidorm. What a ridiculous post.

A Volvo driver is way superior to a smoker who goes to Benidorm.
Anyway you cant say you haven't noticed surely? When you're at the check outs in Asda they're just a tad too formal and matey as opposed to Tesco where they treat you with a sort of lofty politeness.

I actually agree with this. I was in Asda a few months ago and was at the checkout, she told me the total and I put my card in the machine and handed her my club card. She looked at me with total disgust and had a lot of venom in her voice when she said in a snooty voice 'This is Adsa, not Tesco'. My mate and I almost doubled over laughing at how bloody stupid I had been and I think if she could have had us removed from the store then she would have. Most other cashiers would have joined in laughing at such a silly mistake to make but OH NO, not this one. When you work on the checkout or with the public then a little customer service goes a long way.

I'd love to come across someone who is both "formal" and "matey" at the same time. It doesn't make sense. It just sounds like Quiroga has it in for decent working folk to me.

Most of my adult life was spent working in some form of retail and you get all sorts of customers but I think I can honestly put my hand up and say that I was never once ignorant or rude to anyone unless they had became that way with me, even then I could be quite sarcastic but still remain professional. There were days where I didnt want to get out of bed, days when I had a mood from hell and even a day where I had just burried my granda and went to back to work after the funeral and I may have been a bit quieter than usual but I still remained polite and curtious. I really do despise bad manners from shop assistants, I dont want to hear how their boyfriend two timed them at the weekend as they are scanning my bridget jones knickers through the till. I dont want to hear how unfair their boss is for not giving them next tuesday off work as its their great aunts dogs sisters goldfish owners dentist appointment. There is a time and a place for it all and its not when they are serving me. Rant over......and breath!

I normally shop as ASDA as it it at least half the distance than a trek to Tescos or Sainsbury's for me (I'm old fashioned and walk most places).
Asda - by far the best value, some of their meat and home brands are shocking though.
Tescos - if I want something more specialised for cooking and better wine.
Sainsburys - slightly better than Tescos, but you pay for it. Like Tescos, it has a good 'finest' type range.
I don't generally shop in Aldi, Iceland and the likes, nothing against them, just you can never seem to do a proper shop and some of the cheap home brands are rank. Good to wander around for an 'impulsive' cheap deal (but it's normally site you didn't want in the first place).

I think Tesco are poor even though I do shop there most often. I go to a Morrisons sometimes, its twenty minutes from where I live but its a great shop. They have a salad bar, a fish counter, a hot meat counter, a pie shop, a bakery part, a butcher's counter, a deli counter, an electric goods counter, an instore cafe. Yjeu also do their own pizzas instore which are great value. The Tesco I go to is not much smaller and they have nothing other than a small bakers part. Its really crap. They clearly don't give a shíte about the customers, they just put stuff on the shelves and hope you buy it. I hope this news for Tesco will make them try harder to give the customers what they want.

Large Hat, you do know Tesco is British and Asda is owned by the American supermarket chain, Walmart, favoured by the "trailer park" demographic? Maybe your loyality to Asda is a little misplaced.
I don't shop at either by the way.

Nope. I went in once since they did it up. I have a hairdresser thanks, I don't need one in my supermarket, I buy my make up from a department store, I don't want any kids toys & there's a dry cleaners elsewhere. I walked out and haven't been in since. As for Asda, I don't need greeting as I enter the store, I just want to get a couple of groceries, which they probably don't stock anyway.

Yes I do, and I go to Walmart when I am in the US and it is absolutely wonderful. Ownership has nothing to do with the retail experience in Asda. The stores have not changed since they were taken over by Walmart. Americans do big box retail far better than us in general, but it's simply not a factor for me in where I choose to shop. Tesco go out of their way to avoid paying tax in the UK, so why should UK citizens have any loyalty to them?

What has demographics got to do with you thinking I should be loyal to Tesco rather than Asda because Tesco are British owned?
Obviously we are a different demographic, unless you're a bloke using a bird's name on BA.

I didn't think you should be loyal, it was just your Asda till you die rhetoric was, well, bullshit. & I meant a social demographic, so there's no need to be so angry.

I'm not in the least bit angry. Do you often describe things you disagree with as bullshit? I thought everyone used supermarkets, unless you shop exclusively at Marks & Spencer and Waitrose. I've no issue with someone saying they are a different social demographic, so long as you don't do a Quiroga and suggest that people who shop or work at one supermarket and drive Volvos are "better" than people who shop or work at a different supermarket and go on holiday in Benidorm, or use phrases such as "working class scum". I was angry about that, but not about anything you have posted.
