Excluding the last 30 mins against Newcastle, we have looked the better team in our last 4 games!!

Given that Newcastle have just beaten scum 3-0, I think that is pretty good form.

If we can continue that form until the end of the season we would finish on 45 (ish) points which would mean survival!!

We have some good players due back from injury, add to this any additions made in January, things are suddenly looking much more positive.

Do you think we are turning our season around?

Keep your feet on the ground. Yes, we've picked up a few points recently but we have still been pretty poor in recent games, especially at home.

With the games coming up in the next few weeks, any points are a bonus. The Norwich and Wigan games next month are huge. Let's see where we are at the start of March. Hopefully we'll still be in with a shout for the final third of the season. The home form must improve and soon!

I think teams like qpr & wolves are going to come under serious pressure soon.

We have been gash up until very recently, but qpr have said to be having a  good season and are 1point above us.

If we can keep within a couple of points of these two teams by the middle of feb, with the run in we have id be confident we could stay up...

If we can carry on playing well, maybe picking up a couple of points against the big teams, and beating Wigan and Norwich, then we should be just in and around the the bottom 5 teams. In February/March, we should get Chungy and Stu back, which should see us pick up more points against teams around us. There is no set points total to aim for, we just need to win games against teams near us in the table and we mught have a chance.

There were positives – Ngog looked up for it and confident with the ball, Mark Davies looked more valuable in a central role, and Steinsson and Ricketts seem to be huge improvements over the other options we’ve been using in those positions.  Of course the biggest bright spot of all was the fact that Coyle finally went 4-5-1 and it paid dividends.

However, I’ve seen way too many false dawns – 4-0 over QPR, 5-0 over Stoke, beating Blackburn away – to get any real optimism from this win.  Mitigating factors include the wind, Everton’s ~60% possession, Everton’s general lackluster play, and the fact we got away with Knight’s weekly brainfart when he headed it right to Stracqualursi.  Also, the man who scored the winner isn’t going to be here much longer.

We've given ourselves a chance now. The hard work is only just beginning, we've got a long long way to go yet. But we have got almost all of our relegation rivals to come to the Reebok yet and despite our away form being better than home currently I would still rather the likes of Wigan, Blackburn, QPR to be coming here than having to go there and beat them.

We won't get much from the next three games, probably nothing. Therefore there's a good chance we'll be bottom in February. But looking at the fixtures of those teams I've just listed, they probably aren't getting many points so we will still be in touch by the time we get some winnable games again.

Like I said the job has only just begun... but coming back from a situation like that is the kind of thing that can change the entire complexion of a relegation battle. So let's enjoy what I hope will be a comfortable afternoon at Macc, and see if we can't nick something from Old Trafford and continue to defy the odds.

I, for one, expected us to get stuffed at Everton.  I thought they'd build on some decent form and steamroller us.  I started Jan thinking we'd get nothing, so we're already 3 points better-off than I expected; who knows what more we might get.

If we can continue to play as we did last night, then there is definitely hope that we can save our season.  While we have a tough set of games in January/February, our run-in is comparatively "easy".  Wigan, Blackburn, Wolves and QPR will all still have to fact City, United, Spurs and Arsenal in April/May, plus a number of bottom six clubs have to play each other, which could well cause a gap in points.  We obviously have to be on the right side of that gap.

I couldn't concentrate on the rest of your post after that guff.  Apart from 10 minutes in the 2nd half we were distinctly 2nd best the whole game against Newcastle.

Fingers crossed that we have turned some kind of corner but given the opposition coming up it might be hard to tell

That was REALLY really poor today. I wanted to claw my own eyes out watching that. 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

F: Robbo, Pratley
D: SKD, Knight
C-: Bogdan, , RC, Wheater, Eagles
C: Riley, Klasnic, Petrov
Subs: Mavies and N'Gog: C+

Because he scored, I'd bump Wheater up to a C and since we improved when Mavies came on, I'd give him a B.

I'd give Bogdan a C, because he couldn't do much about the goals and made some decent saves in the first half.

It was a cup tie vs a league two side; putting in a crap performance is mandatory for a Premier League side.  What it showed was two things (or one of two things).

Firstly, nobody really thinks that the 11 we put out shouldn't be beating a league two side.  That tells us (or it should) that the 'crapness' of the side this season isn't purely a lack of quality; rather, it's mental.  Admittedly it's hard to be motivated for a trip away to Macclesfield, but I think it shows where certain players' heads are at the minute.

It may also have shown us that 4-4-2 really isn't the way to go for the rest of the season, as we looked just as disjointed in the cup as in the league with that formation.
