In my time watching us he is the second best manager.

Bruce Rioch was better.

Lofthouse retired 20 years before I was born but 285 goals and an FA Cup do not lie.

Good manager but never managed us in the Prem, his football was a joy to watch, but Big Sam shades it for me.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so just give the twat a good shoeing, he'll respect you.

Yes he had as much skill, more class and was more of a goal threat. Youri was better than Jayjay.

Lofthouse is the greatest though.

Yes to Sam (obviously) and a massive yes to Okocha, players may have done more for Bolton than him, but talent wise, he's the greatest.

IMO of course.

Bruce started the revival. The football we played for the 3 years he was in charge is the best I've seen from us. Sam did a great job but Bruce is a great man.

Best ever season (& football) in my lifetime was 1996/97 under Colin Todd.

I always think Riochs first season in charge, 1992/93, was better. Even though we got 98 points and 100 league goals in Todds season I thought the excitement in 93 was unbelievable. Great times.

Both great though.

For me Allardyce was the best manager we have ever had. He achieved more in his time than any other manager and brought a level of success to the club that I fear we will never see again. Rioch was good but I don't think he was even close to Sam looking at their overall records. Does anyone have the win/draw/loss stats?

Fair point. Happy to change my comment to "best post-war manager".

Another decent manager who has not been mentioned was Ian Greaves.
