I had a good chat with a young fella from Burnley yesterday afternoon who was servicing me in my home. We got round to discussing Owen Coyle naturally and he said he understood why he jumped ship with "Bolton being a bigger club" and I modestly disagreed with him, arguing that theres probably not much in it.

But despite despising the term "big club" and finding the arguing between certain sets of supporters over whose club is bigger utterly pathetic, it got me thinking about how big BWFC is in relation to other North West clubs (excluding the media darlings of Liverpool and Manchester), i.e. Wigan, Blackburn, Burnley, Preston, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Acrington, Blackpool.

So this thread could be as sad as eleven year olds comparing willy sizes, but like that, its natural to be curious - so where does Bolton rank? Taking everything into account (success, support of the last decade, time in the top flight), I think Blackburn edge it, with Bolton just behind, in front of Burnley.

Thanks,

Gloria.

Burnley

Better league record against Bolton (just)
Champions of England twice

Bolton

More seasons in the top flight
Bigger crowd (bigger place, better price, higher division)

Call it a draw.

Thanks for reading

Manchester United
Liverpool
Everton
Manchester City
Bolton
Blackburn
Burnley
Preston
Blackpool
Oldham
Bury
Stockport
Tranmere
Wigan
Rochdale

Manchester is a bigger city than Liverpool and hence City have more fans than Everton but Everton are the bigger club.
Blackburn would have now gone 45 years outside the top division if a rich bloke hadn't started  outspending  Man Utd,Arsenal and Liverpool to buy the title 20 years ago and Wigan would never have played in either of the top two divisions without a rich bloke buying them relative success.
I refuse to allow artificial success bought by  wealthy businessmen to affect my historical ranking. It doesn't matter how many trophies the Arab purchases at Manchester City in the next few years, Everton are a bigger club that don't drop into the second tier let alone the third tier when they aren't being bankrolled.

Wish i had written this, 100% spot on, pi**es  me off when i hear "well City fans deserve this success because of the rubbish they have had to put up with over the years" does that mean Rochdale fans deserve the European cup because of the crap they have had to put up with!!?
utter bollocks, City are a rich mans toy and nothing else,

Unfortunatley bolton will always be behind blackburn in the club standings as we haven't won the premier league and they somehow have.

But I would say we are bigger than Burnley at present.

Bolton are 12th in the Football League in terms of seasons spent in the top flight, i.e. only 11 clubs in the country have had more seasons in the top flight - with 73. Blackburn have 72 and Burnley have 52.

The term ''Big club'' means different things to different people. For me first of all its the quality of
the football played on the pitch, over a period of time.Secondly how the club is run off the pitch,
the way the directors act,how transfers are conducted, how they treat their supporters.Thirdly
some silverware in the cabinet, though football is a here and now game and it should always
be about what you are competing for this season, not about what you have won previous.Fourthly
quality not quantity of support,no use having sixty odd thousand in the ground if they all sit on their hands,
or they a bunch of whinging tossers. The amount of money in the bank is irrelevant unless its used wisely.
I think if you have all of the above you should consider yourself a ''big club'' not sure if any NW teams match
that at present.
