Isn’t modern music absolute crap. Where are the songwriters, where are the great records, and where are the bloody characters?

On Sunday night I watched a fantastic documentary on BBC4 about Public Enemy, the greatest band in the world. They weren’t manufactured on a TV show, they started right at the bottom playing at local parties and on local radio. They had real characters in the band who could write thought provoking lyrics which lead to some of the best albums of all time like Yo! Bum Rush The Show and It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

The band has history, some of it good and some of it bad, but you could write ten books about Public Enemy and every page would be interesting. So why are the so-called stars of today so utterly bland? Why can they only write about being dumped/how great they are/how well they dance/how many cars they have? When was the last time a record changed the world like Public Enemy’s Fight The Power?

The music business should be shut down. Do you agree?

It really is crap.

I had the misfortune of flicking on to radio 1 while driving the other day and they had this bloke; can't mind his name but it sounded like James Blunt, just basically talking in a cockney accent, over 2 chords on an acoustic guitar.

and when it finished Ferne Cotton basically wet herself saying this was the best thing since sliced bread.

And I'll bet you never hear another record from the tw*t again.

Think the best example of piss poor music is Susan Boyle.

If a woman like that has a chance in the music business then anyone does, very very over rated.

But as long as idiots like simon cowell are about it's not going to improve.

Have a think, how many records that were released in the last year or two will we still be raving about in 20 years?

That show went to new lows last night, they said they want to promote new music yet every week they mime and have not bothered to write an original song for the winner.

Anyone can do rubbish covers.

That's the point, modern music is made up of x factor rejects.

As for an album I couldn't give you one,,,,,,,,,,,,oh ''now that's what I call Disney''?  Wink

The best music is usually the stuff you don't hear on the radio too often.
For music to be a chart success, it has to grab an audience quickly. And good music does the opposite - it takes you several listens to get the hang of it. But thats just me. The best album I've heard this year was The King of Limbs by Radiohead. On first listen it gave me earache, but I stuck with it knowing that like all recent Radiohead albums, it would click on my 95th listen.

Different people want different things from music. Most people judge music based on how good it sounds. That isn't necessarily the case with some people, myself included. I like stuff that gets me thinking or takes me back to a time in my life that I loved. To me, music is all about associations, and theres as much good stuff out now as there ever was. Its just about finding it.

Thanks for reading,

Gloria.

Coldplay with Mylo Xyloto

 Shocked

Music is totally subjective so there's not much you can say.

I like all sorts though from hip hop to jazz even classical stuff, the modern radio stuff just aint my thing.

I agree there is far too much shite around. Even within genres I quite like- and will listen too anyway.

But stuff like X-Factor is just an indictment of what people think is 'music' nowadays and is only a reflection of shite like The Wanted, Justin Bieber etc. what kids these days listen to. I'm not sure which came first there, the chicken or the egg, with regards to reality TV singing shows dumbing down music or music already being on it's arse and the X-Factor just reflecting that.

Most things that become popular I usually end up turning off from. Ed Sheeran for example, I was listening to about 12-14 months ago when all his stuff has about 5,000 hits and I'd be raving to anyone that would listen that he'll be getting future number ones, now he has broken through into mainstream, I'm finding myself less of a fan.

Most of my listening material tend to have had a career that started before the 00's.

Hi Natasha.

It would be a waste of time as to a person lacking sophistication, my music would sound like a mere noise.

I've been told my whole life my taste in music is poor, but as exclusivity is something else I look for in music, that doesn't bother me.

But having noticed there are several quite quirky souls on here, I have been meaning to interact with the Music Thread a lot more, so keep your blinkers peeled on that one.

Thanks for reading,

Gloria.

Cut the BS Gloria, just give me your five favourite albums. I can guarantee I won't mock your choices, as I am keen to find new music I like.

The King of Limbs by Radiohead

Radiohead are a fantastic band. I too have been told that I have a crap taste in music, but most of the people who tell me this listen to feckin Tinchy Strider and all that wank. If you can get a record deal for talking quickly over a backing track, then get me bloody Simon Cowell on the phone. In terms of what I like, I'm into rock, not heavy metal, more Radiohead kind of rock. This one band that I listen too quite a lot are called Everything Everything. They haven't really had any publicity and didn't get into the charts, but their debut album "Man Alive" got nominated for the Mercury Prize this year and they played Glastonbury too. It's got some great tracks on it and they are amazing live. Have a listen: http://www.everything-everything.co.uk/

What sort of music are you into?

Justin Bieber

Can someone tell me how this guy has so called ''made it'' in the music industry, he is the most sickly little bastard I have ever seen.

Apparantly he was singing to the 2 women judges on x factor a while back, bit of a creep considering the guys 17 and they are what 30+ plus he sounds like his balls haven't dropped which would worry me at 17.

Rant over.
