0/5. Completely inconsistent, booking players for the same things that he let others off for and a contentious red card decision. Knob head.

You know people complain about Howard Webb but after the Cahill incident, Webb would have thought about it, talked to his assistants, and then made a decision.  Attwell just goes with his gut, which is usually wrong.

A quote from the Mirror newspaper

REFEREES RATING

Stuart Attwell (Warwickshire) 5

Incompetent at best and that's being considerably kind.

Most paper's say the same thing.  Angry Angry Angry

Attwell has a history of bad decision making, and not just against us.

It is no wonder that the English referees have a bad reputation in the rest of the world when we have incompetent fools like this one and that there is no independent body to police/referee the referees - inconsistancy with our refs is the worlds worst!

According to BBC stats, Bolton committec 5 fouls, Spurs 10. We got two yellows and a red, Spurs got nothing. I know the severity of the foul is relevant but somehow the figures don't indicate impartial decission making to me.

It wasn't a red card offence, but it was still pisspoor play from a so-called England international defender.

When the going gets tough you need your best players to step up, sadly Cahill hasn't been able to do that at all this season.

Poor play or not does not excuse a decision like that.

A referee is advised to consider:

distance from goal
position on field (ie wide or central)
does he have full control of the ball
is there and covering defender
is it an obvious goal scoring opportunity

The referee is not supposed to weigh up the likelihood of a goal from what he thinks may happen. ie, he can't say  "yes Knight was level but he might not have got back in time" the only relevant bit is "yes Knight is level". If Kevin Davies was fouled in exactly the same position would he have deemed it a red card? I doubt it very much. Like I said before though - it is not for the referee to guess what an individual player would or would not be capable of doing, he is merely supposed to assess the situation. And he did not do that.

Didn't the same referee send Cahill off for a similar thing last season at Arsenal?

For me, a player breaking forward in a wide position rarely results in a obvious goal scoring chance. Anything could have happened after he ran onto that ball. It only takes a second for the other defenders to run back by the time the attacker has headed toward goal.

He sent Cahill off for a "tackle from behind" which it was but hardly dangerous just full blooded.

10 seconds before that he'd ignored totally a blatant foul on CYL

again there can be only 2 reasons... he's incompetent or he's doing it on purpose.

The standard of refereeing in the UK is completely abysmal.

The Dutch, Belgian and North-west German based referees have got together, with support from their respective FA's for an experiment which does seem to be working as the standard of refereeing has increased big style.  Every other week the referees referee league games in their "neighbouring" countries.  (ie.  North-west German ref go to do top-level league games in Holland and Belgium, Dutch referees go to do top-level league games in North west Germany and Belgium and Belgian refs do top-level league games in Holland and North west Germany).

The experiment has been successful that they are actually planning to do it on a weekly basis from next season (so in fact a Dutch ref in one month could be covering games in Holland, Belgium and Germany), and as I have already said the standard has increased and not as many stupid or pathetic decisions, so far, this season as what there have been in the Premiership.

May be we could do the same with possible Dutch, French and Scottish refs  (actually isn't it funny we do not hear of as many gaffs from Scottish refs - why?)?

Just a thought.

Thankyou for reading,

Because it's a shitty little league that doesn't get much media attention?

"Tackle from behind?"

Since when did that warrant a red card?

Red card is violent conduct, brutal or excessive force endangering safety, or denying OGSO. Oh and insulting or abusive language. Was it any of those?
