I've noticed a bit of confusion in the Spurs match thread regarding the 'Y' word. A couple of people kicked up a fuss and a couple others think the word depends on the context.

I've removed posts with the 'Y' word as it is something that is trying to be thrown out of the game.

I have it on good authority from a Spurs fan that it is not offensive, or racist if you look at the historical context. It's just a load of liberals misinterpreting it. I'll find out the full details and report back sometime during the week.

Sorry for the delay in my response, Spurs fans are useless.

From a brief conversation (forgive me making up spellings and being vague about dates):

Prior to Tottenham becoming a dump in the latter half of the last century it's population included a large amount of wealthy Jews who actively supported their local team, Spurs. They were commonly known as 'Yids' or 'Yiddos'. This was all dated in the 1880's onwards.

During WW II concentration camps were called 'Yidosh' and it is commonly mistakenly assumed that this is a derogatory term derived from that. The person that decided to publicly take offence to the whole issue was David Baddiel, this was much to the disgust of Spurs fans as he is an Arsenal fan.

It's not offensive, it's just people are misinformed. Apparently it is well documented on the internet.

You are very poorly informed regarding the concentration camps, though in one respect, you are correct, Yid is not an offensive term per se.
Yid comes from Yiddish, a European Language taken mainly from Hebrew and German.

Many Manchester Jews call their yarmulke/kippah a Yid Lid.

I shall be taking issue with my informant.

I didn't do any research on what he told me and took it as read.

I think it's funny that the Jew's name on South Park is Kyle, one letter changed and DP would be outside TV headquarters with a sign saying "down with this kind of thing."
