Martin,
True and honest question for you....
Are you still based on Domincan Republic?
If so, have you heard of Punta Cana? What is it like?
Only asking as a friend of our has just come back from there, recently, as she said it was amazing, so may be going next year.
Cue the normal flack from the usual provacateurs with their usual jibes.....

There's a travellers choice hotel for "romance" there. On Trip Advisor. Love reading disastrous holiday reviews on trip advisor some absolute gems on there. Pure comedy. here's one. I booked this hotel in hope to stay cheap so that money could be spent on other things in the city. We were excited to know that it was only a couple of blocks from time square. Brought our own sheets, pillows, blanket, towels and toilet paper!!! Which is pathetic to begin with!!! We checked in Thursday Aug 31, and found out 2 mins after we checked in that there was a MURDER there the same day!!!! Yes a murder!!!! A 22 year old female body found under the bed on the 6th floor!!!! And of course the people at the desk would not dare mention ANYTHING about this. I walked back in and immediately checked right back out. I didn't even have to go to the room, the lobby was gross and others there who were also checking out and were disgusted by the rooms. This hotel need to be closed down or taken over and fixed up by new management!!!!! Think 4 or 5 times over before staying here...please!

On a serious note. My mate stayed at Punta Cana and loved it. Very good all inclusive hotel and the food and drink was good. Only drawback being that there is nothing once you get outside the hotel complex. The locals are very poor and it is not advisable to stray out of the hotel on your own. All the hotels have security and it is advisable to see the island by using the trips organised by the travel agents. Make sure you book for the Dominican Republic and not Dominica. I have been to Dominica and there is not a lot there and the beaches are crap.

I'm not sure they organise the sort of trips Dutchy is after.

Punta Cana is where I work, and can assure you that the locals certainly are not poor, and straying away from the hotel is far safer than most people assume, the area is pretty much restricted to the hotel as Bavaro( the nearest town) does have some amazing shopping , mostly designer wear(much cheaper than the uk), but not great nightlife, although there is a nightclub called imagine set in caves, the beaches and excursions are aamazing. Hotels to consider are the Iberostar, Dreams Punta Cana, Catalonia Bavaro, and Bavaro Princess. Take it from me the Dom Rep is a lot nicer and cultured than people give it credit for.

I think you missed his point Martin, he wanted to know if there was a thriving tranny scene in Punta Cana.

Thanks for the info, Martin. Previously been to Cayo Guillermo, in Cuba a few times, but TC don't seem to have it in next years brochure, for the specific hotel, and neither do a few others travel agents so looking at other places and, as I said, a friend of ours told us about this place as she and her friend were there a couple of weeks ago. Must admit from the photos it does look idyllic and is a real option for next summer. Again, thanks

Why do people travel half way across the planet only to go to an all inclusive and partake in a few wankyy day trips?
I've been on them before and they get boring after the first few days, you may as well stay at home, get a sunbed, stock up on ale and order a load of takeaways, it'd be cheaper.
There's a big and interesting world out there and people are still trying to book packages with Lunn Poly.

I can understand if they are old farts that don't like anything too unpredictable, but relatively young people consistently only booking package tours need to take a good look at themselves. Shows a distinct lack of character in my opinion.

If I had young kids I'd probably go the package route because it's less stressful. But anyone without that sort of baggage should be seeing the world, not seeing various Blackpool's with a bit of sun.

Went to Havanna last time I was in Cuba and that was more than a day-trip, Squidgy, and you know what it was amazing - saw the posh bits, saw the poor bits but in general the people were amazing and that wasn't all-inclusive and plenty of time to explore the city for ourselves - even in the evening. Although the rest of the stay at the resort, in Cayo Guillermo, was all-inclusive but we could leave the resort go to other places, such as Trinidad-de-cuba or the local towns. Been Cuba 4 times and will go, again, sometime in the future - before the Yanks move in and spoil the place with starbucks, maccyD's, Wendys, etc

I went to Havana about 12 years back.
Can't recall seeing any posh bits, but have to say it is probably one of my favourite cities.

They are currently doing the city up bit by bit and over the last 5 years it has changed considerably - saw photos, from parents, when they went about 8 years ago and to the same squares I went to and yes they are definitely improving the city beyond belief - still a lot of work to be done in the city but it is taking shape. And foreign investment (excluding US, of course) is definitely helping. It has to be one of my favourite cities in the world.

I love travelling and exploring new places, Nothing better than bokoing all the seperate bits to your holiday and going somewhere new.
I have found myself being drawn into City breaks recently, I'm looking at Venice with the missus next year.
Also heard good things about Croatia, that is also on the list.

Trying not to put you off as Venice is such a gorgeous city and full of hidden streets which the majority of tourists do not see and the architecture is amazing but, there are certain times of the summer period, due to the heat, where it does stink a little bit - as you may imagine as they do not really have sewers - apart from the canals. Get over that and I am sure you will love the place. Croatia - not been since it became independent and rebuilding itself after the civil wars of the area - but when I was there, when it was Yugoslavia, it was amazing, relaxing and exciting at same time and the scenery is just bigger than wow!!!

Continuing the travel theme, what's the best place everyone has visited?
For me, I went to a small Greek island called Thassos a few years back. Tiny place, but what a brilliant getaway.
And for your piss up, lads/girls holiday, Magaluf. Good shout for Prague as well, you can have a cracking time there no matter what you go for.

Stayed in Thassos a few years ago at Golden Beach. Very nice. My favourite Greek island is Skiathos.
